Ryden: 8 months!

Ah! These past 2 months have seemed to fly by much faster then the others! I remember thinking, wow, he's 6months...he's getting so big...and now he is 8 MONTHS. How did that happen? We are just LOVING this age! It is so much fun!!! He's so active, crawling everywhere and getting into everything! Loves to play with his toys all day and explore. It's so fun to watch. He is now standing on his own too! He'll pull himself up on things and stand up...such a big boy!

You wouldn't believe it by looking at these photos...but I had the hardest time getting him to cooperate this time, haha! He did not want to stay on the chair, let alone smile for me, lol. He kept getting really mad and upset. But then toward the end, he started cracking up...not sure why...but I was happy I could get a few good ones! Enjoy these few favorite "month" photos! He is just the cutest!!!

Tip Tuesday: Naturally Posed Portraits

I don't know if you're like me, but I really strive for my photos to reflect a natural, relaxed look. In pose (or lack there of) and expression I choose to use to emphasis this. Now, it is not always easy to achieve this look and feel. The whole essence of achieving a natural, relaxed look and feel is that your clients actually have to feel natural, relaxed...comfortable.

So the question is, how do you do this? How do we make our clients feel a certain way during the shoot, so we achieve these types of photos? Well, there are a couple things we can do :) Now keep in mind, these are things that have worked for me and my clients...you may find your own way of doing things.

One, the most simple thing you can do is get to know your clients and build a relationship with them. Now obviously we don't have the time or ability to spend hours upon hours with our clients getting to know them, but it's the little things that count. Shooting them an email here and there, asking them how things are going...how wedding planning is going. Facebook friend them! As silly as that sounds, facebook friending them allows us to see our clients on a day to day basis and get to know little things about them and visa versa. Meet with your clients a couple times before their wedding. Meet at a fun coffee shop and just chat about their upcoming wedding. I mean what bride doesn't LOVE chatting about their wedding?

Two, during the shoot/portrait time encourage your clients with words. This is often one of the first times your clients have had professional portraits taken and often this can result in them being very nervous. The more encouraging you are to them will help them to feel relaxed and more confident. Reassure them and encourage them that they are doing a great job. I know us photographers can often get wrapped up in everything going on behind the camera, but taking the time to encourage your clients and make them feel good goes a long way!

Three, you yourself must feel comfortable and relaxed. If you look nervous and unsure, then your clients are going to feel that way too. As the photographer, you create the atmosphere for your clients. Strive to relax and connect with your clients and create a comfortable atmosphere. This will make a big difference in the outcome of your photos.

Doing these things will made a huge difference in achieving the natural, relaxed photos you strive for. If your clients feel like they know you, they are going to naturally feel more comfortable. Encouraging them, will boost their confidence and make them feel more comfortable. Being relaxed yourself will make your clients feel more comfortable.

So those are my suggestions for achieving natural and relaxed photos. We only can do our best. Sometimes we can do everything mentioned above and still have a hard time achieving this feel. The clients have a responsibility too to do their part to help achieve natural, relaxed photos.

Thanks for reading! Have a great tuesday everyone...and enjoy a few of my favorites from this last weekend's engagement shoot :)

Tip Tuesday: How You Make Their Day

After shooting an awesome wedding last saturday, it got me thinking. Thinking about what a great influence we have as photographers to help make someones wedding day amazing...or the opposite of amazing, not fun and stressful.

I always meet with my brides a couple weeks before the wedding to plan and go over their wedding day schedule. On the day of we do our best to stick to it...but there is a lot of time needed for getting ready for your big day...and sometimes you just can't rush that.

On saturday as wedding days often go, we were running a bit behind. As a photographer, there are two things I could do to handle this. One, I could continually be telling the bride what time it is and how long till photos, I could basically rush her to make her be ready for the scheduled photos. That way we have enough time to get all the photos I think we need to get. Or two, I could be relaxed, go with the flow of the day and not put anymore added unwanted stress on the bride. Let her take her time and enjoy every moment of the day and not feel rushed. Now this doesn't mean if were running reeeeeeally behind, like so behind we may not get any of the pre-ceremony photos done, that I can't pipe in and let her know that if she'd like photos before we should take them soon or something like that.

My theory is that a great wedding photographer should be able to be flexible, make the day as fun and stress free as possible for the bride and groom and even if left with only 15mins for the scheduled portrait time, still get plenty of amazing photos! I cannot tell you how many times I've had to do what was an hours worth of scheduled portraits in half the time or less. I would much rather go with the flow and have less time, then create a stressful day for the bride where she looks back and remembers that, instead of the fun she had! Yes, of course us photographers prefer LOTS of time for photos. We can then make sure to get all the shots we want and take our time. But I really think that as photographers, we should be able to rock the photos no matter the amount of time we have to work with.

As photographers, we are with the bride and groom a large chunk of the day. We do have the ability to help really make the day amazing for them...or stressful and harder. I've heard stories of both...where the couple raves about the photographers and how amazing they were and how surprisingly fun they were. And I've heard stories of how stressful, rushed and boring the photographers were. Trust me, the bride & groom WILL remember how you made there day! If you help make it amazing...they will never forget that!

Thanks for reading! I promise next time Tip Tuesday will actually be on tuesday, haha! And with that, I leave you with my favorite ring photo to date!

Pina & Sean + baby: Maternity

I could not be more excited for these two wonderful friends of ours! My hubby has known Pina & Sean Brown for many years...and when we started dating in 2006, I began to become good friends with them as well! I can say that they are some of the most generous, genuine people we know :) And so much fun!

Pina & Sean have been married for 7 years next month. They have always wanted kids, but decided to wait until Pina was done with nursing school to start a family. Wanting kids is just an understatement. Pina has passionately wanted to be a mother and have a family her whole life and a great mother she will be! Their plans shifted a bit when Pina finished school and soon after found out she had endometriosis. For those of you that don't know, endometriosis is when the cells of your uterus lining start growing on the outside of your uterus, causing many problems, especially with getting pregnant. Pina had to have surgery and have one ovary removed.

Due to the endometriosis and having one ovary removed, they did not know if or when she could ever get pregnant. The infertility rate for people who have this condition is very high.  Despite everything that was put in their path, they were still determined one way or another to have a family. They continued to try to have a family. They were even considering adoption (and still may at some point). We all were praying that they would get pregnant and had faith that the Lord could do ANYTHING!

I have to say, I know how strong the desire for having a baby is when you feel you are ready to be a mom. It can be a very long, hard journey...if it doesn't happen in our timing. As time went on, more and more of our friends got pregnant.  I have to be honest, if it were me  I would have had a reeeeeeally hard time being excited and supportive of other people getting pregnant, if it wasn't happening for me. Pina is very different then me and many others...that's for sure! As I saw her find out that her friends were pregnant and continually talk about baby stuff, she was ALWAYS excited, loving and supportive of them. Congratulating them with a happy attitude and sweet smile. I was so impressed with how Pina handled everything. She truly has an amazing character.

A year was rolling around to when they first starting trying to have a family and they were soon planning on getting the adoption process started. Right before this happened, they found out they were PREGNANT!!! Despite the odds and only having one ovary and trying for many months, they were pregnant!! The Lord is truly so good and above all "statistics" and odds and what the doctor's "say" are likely. Pina told us the good news when she came over to meet our sweet boy, 4 days after he was born. I was beyond excited and will never forget that moment :) The Lord is so good.

Their sweet girl is due in just a couple weeks! She will be here in no time. They are planning on doing a home birth and I just know Pina will do an amazing job!! I cannot wait to meet sweet baby brown and for her and Ryden to grow up being friends! Thanks so much for choosing me to be your photographer, Browns! It is truly an honor to share your story :)

Katelyn :)

P.S I have to say just what a gorgeous prego Pina is!!! :)
